Fall Colors in Duluth: A Great Time to Visit

There’s something about fall in Duluth.

The air gets a little cooler, the leaves start changing on the hills around the city, and Lake Superior seems to take on a different look. It’s a great time to be outside, whether you’re here for a weekend of hiking and fall colors or just looking for a reason to get away for a few days.

If you’re thinking about a fall trip to Duluth this year, early to mid-October is a good time to plan for. Of course, the timing can change from year to year, and the trees along the North Shore don’t all change at once. But that’s part of what makes fall here fun—you can usually find plenty of color somewhere.

Take a Drive Up the North Shore

If you’ve never experienced the North Shore in the fall, put it on your list.

The North Shore Scenic Byway (Highway 61) follows Lake Superior north from Duluth, and there are plenty of places to stop along the way. You can make a whole day of it or just drive for an hour or two and see where you end up.

A few spots worth checking out:

Gooseberry Falls State Park is an easy choice for combining fall color with waterfalls and hiking. It’s close enough to Duluth for a day trip and has plenty of places to explore.
Split Rock Lighthouse is another North Shore favorite. The lighthouse, Lake Superior and the changing leaves make for a pretty hard-to-beat combination.
Tettegouche State Park is a good option if you want to get out and hike. There are trails, overlooks and plenty of opportunities to see the fall colors from above.

And if you have more time, keep going north toward Lutsen and Grand Marais. The farther you go, the more the scenery changes.

Just keep in mind that fall color can vary quite a bit depending on where you are. Areas farther inland and at higher elevations can change before the trees right along the lake.

So if you're visiting over a few days, you have a good chance of finding some great color somewhere along the way.

You Can See Plenty of Color Right in Duluth

You don't have to spend your entire trip driving the North Shore.

One of the best ways to see Duluth in the fall is to take a drive along Skyline Parkway. The road winds through the hills above the city and offers some great views of Duluth, the harbor and Lake Superior.

Duluth's parks and trails are another easy way to get outside. Take a walk through Lester Park or Congdon Park, explore the trails around Hawk Ridge or simply walk the Lakewalk and enjoy the views.

And if you happen to be here during the fall bird migration, Hawk Ridge is worth a stop. You might see hundreds of migrating raptors passing through the area.

Don't Forget the Waterfalls

Fall is a great time to go looking for waterfalls, too.

Some of Duluth's waterfalls are tucked right into the city, so you don't have to go far to find them. Lester Park and Congdon Park both have trails and waterfalls that are especially nice when the surrounding trees are changing color.

And if you're heading up the North Shore, there are plenty more waterfalls to add to your list.

Sometimes the best part is finding one that wasn't even on your original itinerary.

And There's More to Do in Duluth in the Fall

Even if fall color isn't your main reason for visiting, October is a great time to be in Duluth.

Depending on when you visit, you can:

Walk the Lakewalk and Canal Park
Watch ships come into the harbor
Explore the Great Lakes Aquarium
Visit the Lake Superior Railroad Museum
Take a ride on the North Shore Scenic Railroad
Enjoy Duluth's restaurants, breweries and coffee shops
Check out fall festivals and events
Take in a UMD hockey game
Visit the Duluth Haunted Ship—happening all of October
Get outside for a hike or scenic drive

There are also several seasonal events on the 2026 calendar, including the Great Pumpkin Train October 15–18 and fall cruises throughout the season.

In other words, you can build your trip around the leaves—or just let the leaves be one of the best parts of your trip.

Planning Your Fall Trip

If you're hoping to catch the fall colors this year, the first half of October is a good window to keep in mind. But don't get too hung up on finding the exact “peak” weekend. The colors change gradually, and there's plenty to see before and after peak color.

Check the Minnesota DNR's Fall Color Finder before you head out, grab a jacket, and leave yourself some time to stop along the way.
